Welcome to the September issue of Guilford Woman!

What a relief it is to say goodbye to those hot, steamy days of summer. Do not get me wrong, I enjoy the summer months as much as anyone but by this point I am ready for a cool period.

Hopefully everyone had a wonderful summer and vacation. My family went to the beach in August as usual. It was a little stressful but by weeks end everyone was in a relaxed mode. I have to say there is typically one mishap per vacation and this year it happened to fall on me. I was out in the ocean relaxing on my raft and decided to step down to go back on shore when I felt this horrible stinging as if a thousand bees had attacked my left foot. I have never been so close to walking on water as those frightening few moments trying to exit the ocean. I had heard about jellyfish stings but truly never realized the pain associated with this. I ran up to my husband and loudly said get me back home. We had no idea how to deal with the pain. I called my mother in Greensboro and told her to get on the computer and find out a remedy. She advised to soak in vinegar and water or urine. I said “URINE”? Number one, how was I going to pull off such a thing in the pain I was in and secondly, how could I ask my husband to do this. I decided to just deal with it and it did subside after a couple of hours. Not the worst thing that could have happened so I guess I was lucky. (The only thing worse would have been jaws himself).

The garden is still producing nicely! The bickering between my cousin and myself has subsided for the most part. The only problem now is that a lot of the plants are spent out and as crazy as this sounds, my cousin (Lisa) refuses to pull them out of the ground. I have told her they will not give off any more vegetables and she just can not give it up. We will soon be preparing the fall crops so I will keep you posted. If any of you have any favorite fall veggies and planting tips, send them our way.

Have a great September and I look forward to visiting again next month.

sail on because
calm waters won’t
make a skillful sailor.
