Dr.
Rick Taavon strolled by in his scrubs, playfully
sulking. Five female providers – his colleagues at
Wendover OB/GYN & Infertility, Inc. – were gathering in
the conference room for a photo shoot with Guilford
Woman.
“He likes being part of the action,” explained Susan
Wolf, the Practice Administrator. “We told him that this
magazine featured women, but that maybe he could be in
the photo shoot if he wore a wig.” Dr. Taavon politely
declined.
In addition to Dr. Taavon and Dr. Wes Davis, Wendover
OB/GYN consists of three female physicians, a certified
nurse midwife, and an OB/GYN nurse practitioner, each
bringing her own personality to the practice. Dr.
Sheronette Cousins, for example, acts as the office’s
fashion guru – straight from Jamaica. Her office desk
displays a dazzling spread of unexpected décor: a shoe
calendar, a picture frame bedecked with heels, and a
collection of jeweled ceramic stilettos.
“I love my shoes,” she quipped. “And for what I do, my
feet have to be treated as well as the rest of the
body!”
Then there is Dr. Marie-Lyne Lavoie, who could
single-handedly author a Webster’s trilingual
dictionary. Born in Quebec, Dr. Lavoie carried her
lilting French accent into good ‘ole North Carolina
where she also is able to communicate with her
Spanish-speaking patients.
Beth Lane, OB/GYN nurse practitioner, could be one of
North Carolina’s biggest anomalies. She is an avid
Carolina fan, complete with a sparkling collection of
UNC memorabilia. However, Beth has been spotted at a
Duke women’s basketball game or two in the past. No
doubt her closet must be lined with countless shades of
blue!
Not
only does each woman add a dash of flair to the
atmosphere, each brings a wealth of specialization that
has helped forge one of North Carolina’s most renowned
practices. Every patient’s journey is carefully guided.
From preventive care to obstetrical care, consultations
to complex surgeries, Wendover’s expert team of
physicians is skilled in every nuance of women’s
medicine.
“Each of us has found our own niche, so to speak,”
explained Dr. Sherry Dickstein.
Dr. Dickstein, the self-dubbed “veteran” of the
practice, cares for a growing segment of the medical
community – maturing women. After a career of nearly
twenty-six years, Dr. Dickstein feels her patient
population has aged with her; so she now specializes in
menopausal care and bone density health. And, she does
it all in-house, another defining characteristic of this
practice. No additional appointments at a distant
hospital, no lines in a second waiting room. Dr.
Dickstein and her team perform bone density testing and
reading of the results right in the office, adding a
“cup of tea while you wait” tone to the visit.
“We want our patients to feel like they’re family,” said
Dr. Dickstein. “As simple as it sounds, we enjoy caring
for our patients.”
The practice also offers several of the country’s
hottest administrative technologies. These include an
electronic patient health record and ePrescribe, a
program that allows for prescription crosschecks as well
as instant communication with the patient’s pharmacy.
Wendover was one of the first in Greensboro to adopt
these technologies.
Dr. Lavoie’s area of expertise highlights the newest
development in surgery. She was one of the first GYN
physicians in the state to earn her certification in
daVinci Robotics, a technology that provides for robotic
assisted surgery for various types of gynecologic
surgical procedures.
Offering patients a high tech-high touch approach, Tanya
Bailey is the resident certified midwife. Tanya walks
each of her patients through a “birth plan” that allows
them to take advantage of Wendover’s technological
advances, but work toward a natural childbirth
experience.
“I’m the support system,” she smiled. “I council the
patient through all nine months, and I’m present with
them through every second of labor. That includes the
husband who stares at me with that panicked ‘What do I
do next!?’ look.”
Support
system. Safe haven. Trusted care. These recurring themes
identify Wendover OB/GYN as one of the most trusted
practices in town. The physicians share a genuine desire
to nurture each patient-doctor relationship and foster a
sense of trust and security.
“Sometimes I feel as if I double as a psychologist,”
laughed Dr. Lavoie. “Whenever a patient is worried about
anything, they come to us; we spend quality time with
our patients.”
These types of relationships are common throughout the
practice. Many patients share a longstanding history
with their personal physicians. Dr. Lavoie, for example,
has seen several of her patients from their first
appointment through their first pregnancy followed by
three successive children.
Take a gander back into Dr. Sheronette Cousins’
shoe-haven office. She’ll fondly hand over a picture of
a small family at their first child’s christening and
then recount the mother’s story. Dr. Cousins and the
mother struggled through five losses until finally the
couple conceived a little girl – the white-gowned
baby in the photo. “I love what I do,” Dr. Cousins said.
“And as hard as medicine is, if I had to choose all over
again, I’d still choose the same profession and the same
place.”
It’s a practice that’s always selective when adding new
providers to its team.
This month, the team welcomes Dr.
Kelly Fogleman from Glen Cove, New York. She comes to
Greensboro with her two sons and her husband, who is a
North Carolina native (Duke or Carolina? Time will
tell.).
The breadth of expertise at Wendover OB/GYN is enriched
by the depth of empathy the providers share with their
patients. Any woman of any age can find a home here. As
their motto suggests, Wendover has a gift for
“Understanding Women.”
